Talks slated with possible Chrysler buyers

NEW YORK -- DaimlerChrysler AG plans to meet as early as Thursday with Magna International Inc., Blackstone Group LP and at least two other prospective buyers for its Chrysler unit, according to people with knowledge of the meetings.
Ruediger Grube, a DaimlerChrysler management board member who oversees corporate strategy, will meet separately with the suitors, the sources said. Kirk Kerkorian's Tracinda Corp., which bid for Chrysler last week, isn't scheduled for the meetings, one of the sources said.
Previous meetings with Magna, Cerberus Capital Management LP and a Blackstone-Centerbridge Capital partnership were held with Chrysler executives in Auburn Hills, Mich.
The New York meetings with Magna and the private-equity firms were reported Wednesday by The Wall Street Journal. All the parties involved declined to comment.
Ashwin Patil, an analyst with London-based International Investment Research PLC, said the likelihood of a Chrysler sale is "very low."
He said the offers are too low, and Magna would risk losing parts sales to other automakers if it were to buy Chrysler. He also said the unions and DaimlerChrysler management are wary of selling to private-equity firms for fear of job cuts.
